Breathing new life into the area, a redeveloped Compass Centre will represent the rich cultural diversity of the local community and provide a new, authentic and convenient precinct that can be enjoyed by current and future generations to come.
Bankstown is currently undergoing a period of significant change and revitalisation, including the delivery of fast and reliable Sydney Metro services from Bankstown to Sydenham in late 2025.
Aware Real Estate, together with our development partner Barings, is seeking to contribute to the transformation of Bankstown by redeveloping the Compass Centre and creating a better experience of Bankstown for all.
Our vision for the project is to reimagine the Compass Centre in new and inviting ways by making the most of its central location in the heart of Bankstown.
To help bring this vision to life, a Development Application (DA) will be lodged to the City of Canterbury-Bankstown Council in 2024 seeking approval for:
- Three buildings including two residential buildings approximately 24-storeys high, comprising over 300 apartments, and one hotel building approximately 19-storeys high, comprising approximately 170 rooms and a function centre.
- Retail and areas for the community to come together on the ground floor and podium levels.
- Landscaping, public area upgrades and enhanced connectivity, including site-through links.
- Associated parking in the basement and podium-level.

Community Consultation
In November and December 2023, we hosted a series of engagement activities to understand initial feedback on the early designs and vision for the site. This included an online survey, information sessions with our immediate neighbours, a community pop up stall, and key stakeholder meetings.
Feedback included:
- Excitement and support for Bankstown’s changing character and the opportunities that new developments will bring to the area
- General support for the redevelopment of Bankstown Compass Centre, which is currently seen as outdated and underutilised
- Bankstown’s unique local identity should be celebrated. Many of you value the strong sense of place and connection the area which allows for a vibrant multicultural community and unique services on offer
- Some concerns around development impacts, including traffic and parking, construction impacts, pedestrian safety and site access during future operations
- Desire for quality mix of retailers, improved pedestrian accessibility and connectivity with the surrounding areas, greater nighttime activation, and more food and beverage operators
- It will be important for the new Compass Centre to reflect and represent of the values of the community, so that locals and visitors feel welcomed and can enjoy the new space
The team has taken the time to review and consider this valuable feedback as we work to refine the design scheme ahead of the DA lodgement.

Opportunities for engagement
We are committed to working closely with the community to achieve the best development outcomes and have appointed community engagement experts at Ethos Urban to help us manage the consultation process.
We invite you to learn more about our proposal by visiting our pop up stall at Bankstown Central, on Saturday 27 April, between 10.30am-1.30pm.
This is an opportunity to view key details from our progressed plans and designs, meet the project team, and ask any questions you may have ahead of the DA lodgement. We will be located in the underpass area between the main shopping centre (Tong Li exit) and the Roni’s building.
You will also have the opportunity to provide formal feedback via the public exhibition process, which will be managed by Council.
